Aiden Sielias of Undercover Otter

The Story of Undercover Otter

Undercover Otter began in 2011, when Aiden Sielias (they/them) started experimenting with hand-dyeing yarn for themselves. Custom orders followed, and in 2018 Aiden left their office job to become a full-time indie dyer.

The business quickly outgrew an 8-square-meter room at home and moved into a dedicated dye studio. Undercover Otter yarn has since appeared at Vogue Knitting Live in New York, Edinburgh Yarn Festival, Oslo Strikkefestival, Fiberfolk Roskilde, Yarn Over Berlin and Woollinn Yarn Festival.

You can shop online or find Undercover Otter yarn through selected stockists worldwide.

What Makes Undercover Otter Unique?

Undercover Otter is built around color, craft, care, and a healthy refusal to blend in.

Aiden hand-dyes bold, saturated yarn in small batches in the Netherlands. Colorways draw on horror, science fiction, weird cinema, and the beautifully strange. The work is hands-on and human-led, with careful attention to animal welfare, responsible sourcing, water use, packaging, and a creative process free from generative AI.

The aim is simple: disrupt the beige craftosphere and make materials with personality.

Undercover Otter values

Queer, Neurodivergent, and Anti-Capitalist

Undercover Otter is proudly queer-owned, neurodivergent-run, and anti-capitalist.

We support your right to exist as you are, without apology or pressure to fit systems that were never built for you. No matter who you are, where you are from, who you love, how your body moves, or how your brain is wired: You. Are. Awesome.

Commerce is not capitalism. We trade to survive, but reject systems that prioritize profit over people. We choose community, accessibility, transparency, and care, and expect the people we work with to treat each other accordingly.

Animals & People

Undercover Otter uses mulesing-free wool from reputable herds around the globe, and make sure that our suppliers take care of their animals.

We equally believe that humans have to be treated fairly. This all comes down to Aiden being a bleeding heart with a Social Work degree. They believe that people want to grow, and should get the oppertunity to do so. In addition we believe in inclusive workspaces, fair compensation for labor and a safe work environment.

Water held in two hands

Water Management

Undercover Otter reuses around 80% of dyeing water by planning dye baths in sequence, repurposing soak water, and filtering it before reuse. Water that must be disposed of is filtered again and neutralized first.

Superwash yarn is sourced from highly regulated treatment plants whose wastewater processes comply with strict EU standards.

So yes, we dye yarn, but we also give a dam(n).

Recycling bins

Recycling

Packaging is made from recycled or more sustainable materials, including biodegradable PLA and FSC-certified or recycled paper.

Shipping boxes and protective materials are reused when they are still sturdy enough, and studio waste is separated for processing.

Generative AI

Undercover Otter does not use generative AI for creative work, product development, dyeing, product or marketing copy, customer service, or business decisions.

Artists, writers, translators, makers, and workers deserve fair pay for their labor, skill, and time.

The environmental impact of generative AI also conflicts with our values.

Some third-party software we use may include AI-assisted features. We disable or avoid optional AI tools where reasonably possible and do not knowingly make customer, order, or confidential business data available to them without appropriate privacy safeguards.
