About Undercover Otter

The Story of Undercover Otter

Undercover Otter began in 2011 as a personal experiment in hand-dyeing yarn. Founder Aiden Sielias (they/them) first started dyeing for themselves, exploring different fibers, colors, and techniques. As their skills grew, so did the demand for their unique colorways, leading to custom orders and the spark of a business idea.

What started as a passion project soon became a full-time endeavor. In 2018, Aiden took the leap—leaving behind their uninspiring office job to dedicate themselves fully to their craft. It was a gamble, but one that paid off. The love of experimenting with dyeing techniques, layering colors, and pushing creative boundaries keeps Undercover Otter evolving.

It wasn’t long before their home studio—a modest 8-square-meter space—could no longer contain the chaos. The business expanded, and Aiden moved operations to a dedicated dye studio, outfitting it from the ground up. Today, Undercover Otter yarns have made their way into the hands of crafters across the globe, with features at major fiber festivals like Vogue Knitting Live in New York, Edinburgh Yarn Festival in Scotland, Oslo Strikkefestival in Norway, Amsterdam Yarn Festival, and Woollinn Yarn Festival in Ireland.

You can find Undercover Otter yarns on our website and at select retailers worldwide. Visit our stockist page for a full list of where to find us!

What Makes Undercover Otter Unique?

Undercover Otter is known for bright, saturated colors and strangely named colorways, inspired by horror and science fiction. Every skein is the result of meticulous experimentation—some colorways feature up to six layers of dye applied using a variety of techniques to achieve the perfect effect.

Our love for genre cinema is at the heart of our creativity. Every colorway name is a nod to horror and sci-fi, from cult classics to modern gore-fests and post-apocalyptic nightmares. Some of the films that inspire us are masterpieces; others are wonderfully awful, filled with more red food coloring than actual acting. Either way, we embrace the bizarre and the brilliant, much like the yarns we create.

So, whether you’re drawn to deep, moody hues or electric, eye-searing neons, there's an Undercover Otter colorway waiting for you—complete with a name that might just make you laugh, cringe, or question our taste in movies.

Queer, Neurodivergent, and Anti-Capitalist

Undercover Otter is proudly queer-owned, neurodivergent-run, and fiercely anti-capitalist.

We believe in, and actively support, your right to exist as you are—without compromise, without apology, and without being forced to fit into systems that were never built for you.

No matter who you are, where you're from, who you love, how your body moves through the world, or how your brain is wired:

You. Are. Awesome.

We stand against colonialism, capitalism, and systemic oppression. Let’s be clear: commerce is not capitalism—we engage in trade to survive, but we reject the exploitative systems that prioritize profit over people. We refuse to participate in the kind of business that thrives on exploitation, gatekeeping, or dehumanization. Instead, we choose community, accessibility, transparency, and care.

We acknowledge the truth: the world wasn’t built for everyone. But that doesn’t mean we have to accept it as it is. We strive to decolonize our practices, advocate for accessibility, and create a space that celebrates neurodivergence, queerness, and all the glorious weirdness that makes us human.

We expect the same from everyone we work with: customers, employees, collaborators, and business partners. Be excellent to each other. There is no room for hate at Undercover Otter (we need all the space for our fabulous yarn).

Stay awesome—to yourself, to others, and to the world.

Animal Welfare

We build our business with love and respect for the animals that provide us with the materials to do our crafty magic.

We use mulesing-free wool only and in some cases can trace the yarn back to the specific flock that has provided us with it.

For silk based yarns, we always check with our suppliers if the silk content was procured from animal friendly silk farms (ie: farms that do not kill the larvae at harvest).

Water Management

If there’s one thing the Dutch know, it’s how to manage water! 💦

At Undercover Otter, we strive to minimize our environmental impact and continuously improve our processes to be as eco-friendly as possible.

Our dyeing process is designed for efficiency: we re-use 80% of all water by planning dye baths in sequence, repurposing soak water, and filtering everything before it’s used again. Any water we do have to dispose of goes through another round of filtering and is neutralized before being released.

We also ensure that the superwash treatment used on our yarns meets the highest environmental standards. Our yarn suppliers comply with strict EU laws, requiring that all by-products are removed from the water before it is discharged—meaning the resulting water is actually cleaner than tap water. Since not all countries enforce the same regulations, we only source superwash wool from highly regulated treatment plants.

So yeah, we dye yarn, but we also give a dam(n.)

Climate Positive

Undercover Otter is a Climate Positive Workforce! Through Ecologi, we offset our carbon footprint, including business travel, by funding climate projects. Plus, we plant trees for every order. We chose Ecologi for their commitment—87% of their funds support reforestation, local empowerment, job creation, and global equality.

Recycling

Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at our yarns. Our packaging is made from sustainable and recycled sources like biodegradable PLA, FSC-certified, or recycled paper. We re-purpose shipping boxes whenever possible and save packing materials like peanuts, bubble wrap, and air pockets to cushion our products—but only if they’re sturdy enough to do the job. We also separate all our waste before it goes to the processing facility.

At every step, we carefully weigh what’s best for our customers, product quality, and the environment—because sustainability should never come at the cost of quality.

⛔ Generative AI

We condemn the use of generative AI and vow to never engage with it for any purpose, and we do not wish to be associated with its use.

We believe that artists, writers, translators and in general all workers deserve fair pay for their labour and their time. Furthermore, the vastly negative environmental impact caused by AI, especially in light of the ongoing climate crisis, is indefensible and inexcusable.

The usage of generative AI in its current form directly contradicts our ethical values.
